It seems a lifetime ago, but there were moments of real promise in the relationship between the Shinnecock Nation and state and local governments. A bill that would have bestowed new individual zip codes for Flanders, Riverside and Northampton failed to be taken up for a vote by the U.S. Senate before Congress wrapped up its business at the end of 2024.
