Masters and Mysteries

If you have ever been tasked with picking watermelon, you know that there are masters and there are mysteries. The man who demonstrates bluntly, a keen eye and a knuckle wrap, “It has to sound like the bottom of a shoe” is a master. I suppose he’s still laughing, thinking of us, and the other fools he inspired, lost among the vines as they try to hit their shoe, then hit the melon, hoping similarity will bring certainty. For those born of sneakers, those who never knew what the bottom of a shoe, a farm shoe that has been worked ... 10 Sep 2024 by Marilee Foster

Debates We Have Loved (or Loathed)

By the time you read this, the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will have taken place and there could have been a moment or two to add to the following rundown. Anticipating the latest debate — and this column — I took a look back at the highlights (or lowlights) we have seen in previous presidential debates. “Seen” is the important word here. While candidates for president of the United States have sparred verbally before — with the Lincoln-Douglas debates probably the most memorable — it was in 1960 that everything changed, and that ... by Tom Clavin

What’s in a Name

The vine wraps its way directly up the deer fence. The flower is fragrant, a cluster of blossoms, a voluptuous spiral, cone-shaped, lupine-like. Apios Americana, the ground nut known locally in precolonial times as Sagaponack. The leaf is edible, the flower will mature into pea-like pods, and below the ground grow hard, dense, edible tubers. We stop and look at the native legume for a while. We take turns sniffing — it is sweet and soft, but still pungent and pure. The settlers, didn’t change the name of this place. They saw that the ground nuts were both big and ... 3 Sep 2024 by Marilee Foster

Old School

The beach parking lot looks like plover flight school. The tiny birds, chattering enthusiastically, look like oversized butterflies fluttering their wings, flying just inches above the ground. Last year, I observed them in a more advanced stage, when they were starting to fly in formation. I took note of a few slow students and definitely an unruly one. Looking back over my years as a middle school teacher, other than a few exceptional students, the ones I remember best were the “bad kids.” Since I taught remedial reading as well as English, I generally had the difficult students. For the ... 2 Sep 2024 by Denise Gray Meehan

VIEWPOINT: The Contemporary Pull of ‘Dirty Dancing’ — Seductive Sex, Pollyanna Politics and Peace

By Joan Baum 1963 — not the best of times, not the worst — writer Eleanor Bergstein caught it on the cusp of change when, almost 40 years ago, she scripted and co-produced “Dirty Dancing,” a screenplay based partly on her own experience at a Catskills resort. It became one of the most captivating movies ever made about that time — before assassinations, dangerous drugs, punk, AIDS, Woodstock, Vietnam. The heroine of “Dirty Dancing,” Frances “Baby” Houseman, the sweet, innocent, compliant daughter of a doctor, is intent on helping the world by way of the Peace Corps, then college. These ... by Joan Baum

Seasonal Migrations

Suddenly, fallen in front of my next step is an insect. Freshly dead, its great abdomen coiled as if receiving its own sting, the wasp is headless. So I look up. The swallows, sometimes at altitudes beyond sight, are pressing south, and their route depends on wind and food source. The sky may be invisible, but the things in it are not. High and on its fluttering course is the monarch. This butterfly, in particular, captures attention because of its implausible migration. Each one I see is one more than before. This is a thing of supreme beauty and a ... 27 Aug 2024 by Marilee Foster

‘Stolen Election’ Claims Are Nothing New

Once we get past Labor Day, it will be Tumbleweed Tuesday for the locals, while, nationally, the presidential race will kick into high gear. There are indications that the Trump team, flabbergasted by its reversal of fortune, is already fantasizing about yet another “stolen election” to explain his loss this November. Ironically, the people who keep getting busted for election malfeasance are Republicans. For example: A former Colorado county election official was found guilty earlier this month of tampering with voting machines in the 2020 presidential election. A jury found Tina Peters, a Republican, guilty on seven counts in the ... by Tom Clavin

VIEWPOINT: Spotlight on PFAS, the 'Forever Chemicals'

By Susanne Jansson Scientists, government agencies, legislators and environmentalists are sounding the alarm and enacting laws that will mitigate the effects of fluorochemicals, the “forever chemicals” that can affect the health of every man, woman and child in our country. Why? Fluorochemicals are an entire family of compounds that are man-made. The uniqueness of these chemicals is their carbon-fluorine bond, which does not exist in nature. Considered one of the strongest bonds in chemistry, it requires a lot of energy to make that bond and a lot of energy to break that bond. Thus, this class of compounds has been ... 26 Aug 2024 by Susanne Jansson

VIEWPOINT: Why No One Is Singin' in This Rain

By Bill Evans Borrowing from my Mississippi upbringing, “toad-stranglin’ rain” is what we had this past Sunday evening over Suffolk County. Now, of course, it’s not unusual to have thunderstorms that produce heavy downpours in the summertime. However, when the thunderstorms from a cold front morph into a shocking, cataclysmic 10 inches of rain, we are left to wonder as to why hundreds of thousands of Suffolk County residents living on the East End continue to be neglected when it comes to having a U.S. government weather reporting station. This is not the first time there has been this type ... by Bill Evans

VIEWPOINT: Thoughts From a Therapist: The Impact of Tiny Screens

By Lisa Wolf, MSW, LCSW Back in December 2021, I wrote a column for this paper titled “The Mental Health of America’s Youth: A Disastrous Year in Review.” The recent findings of the surgeon general regarding the use of cellphones and a proposed warning label (a label long overdue) made me want to revisit that piece, in which I focused predominantly on social media. Jonathan Haidt’s impressive new book, “The Anxious Generation,” brilliantly underlines and explains with great clarity the ways in which this use has actually rewired the child/teen brain. On the micro level of my own practice here ... by lisa-wolf
