The Doldrums

Out of the cover and onto the concrete farm yard come a covey of curious quail. They sidle forward; clown-like, they bump into each other. They select shadows and duck beneath equipment as they make their way toward the barn door and some spilled barley. There was a report on the radio that a tornado had touched down a few miles away, and that more twisters were possible. Silver-white lightning lashed down from the dark sky, relentless waves of rain washed the windshield, and the wind, gusting to 40 mph, hurled roadside debris across the highway. Hampton Bays Alliance To Discuss Housing Program Initiative

The Hampton Bays Alliance will meet via Zoom on Wednesday, November 13, at 7 p.m. The topic of discussion is Governor Kathy Hochul’s Pro-Housing Community Program, a policy designed to reward local governments that are addressing New York’s housing crisis. Localities certified as Pro-Housing Communities are given preference in applications for key discretionary housing grants. Seal Viewing Hikes Planned in Montauk

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is offering a series of hikes to observe wintering seals at Montauk Point State Park. Beginning this month and continuing through April 2025, a State Park naturalist will lead visitors on a scenic beach walk to an area where up to five species of seals may be observed. Along the hike, there will be opportunities to see many winter birds and to explore marine geology. Binoculars are helpful.
