Southampton Girl Scout Emma Cervone recently earned the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Gold Award. Starting scouting as a Brownie, her Gold Award project was inspired by her visits to colleges and seeing the panic buttons around campuses. She researched campus safety measures and the statistics were alarming prompting her to start the Empower Me safety program. By implementing a hands-on self defense program taught by trained professionals in the field of martial arts, Emma is empowering her peers with essential skills and knowledge to protect themselves and stay safe in various situations. To complete the project, she collaborated with her peers, Southampton High School, the Girl Scout liaison, and experienced professionals in their field to ensure the success and sustainability of the program. The Empower Me program is now part of the school's physical education curriculum. COURTESY KATHY CERVONE
