Rethinking ‘Marshes’

What a difference several decades have made when it comes to wetlands. At long last, there’s been a change spurred by enlightened government leadership, action by environmental organizations and, amid the climate crisis, the realization of the importance of wetlands in providing coastal resiliency in the face of climate change. Wetlands, where fish feed and breed — among other attributes — are a vital part of the environment. But for so long this was not recognized. Wetlands were dismissed as “marshes” to be filled and turned into property on which construction could take place. Studies have determined that half of ... by Karl Grossman

The Best Party Ever

I can’t remember the last time we had trick-or-treaters. I miss the little children dressed as wanna-be witches, princesses and superheroes, rushing to the door, yelling, “Trick or treat!” I liked dressing up as a child but not as an adult. I cringed when we received an invitation to a costume party. It seemed like such an effort, but they were always fun. Dressing as a nun was easy while I still had my college robe and fun when paired with a male dancer. I also had been Edward Scissorhands, and a member of Kiss. We had a lot of ... by Denise Gray Meehan

The Deepfake Future

The idea for the event began “percolating,” said Professor Andrea Gabor, who has a home on Shelter Island, while she and panelist Don Waisanen were co-teaching an honors class last semester at Baruch College/CUNY titled “The News Media, Toxic Sludge and the Future of Democracy.” A press release announcing the forum, which was held last week at LTV Studios in Wainscott, quoted Gabor as saying: “In the last 20 years, the U.S. has lost close to 3,000 local newspapers, or about one-third of all independent news outlets. The spread of news deserts has also fueled extremism and local divisions, fracturing ... 3 Oct 2024 by Karl Grossman

We Are Dinosaurs

Some years ago, at an old farmer’s funeral, his son, eulogizing, looked out and upon the congregation. His eyes fell on all those familiars as if we were strangers or suspects. He looked high into the balcony and repeated what he’d just said. “Some of you, here today don’t know it, but you are dinosaurs … dinosaurs.” He continued, giving fantastic details of his father’s humble and yet adventurous life. The dinosaurs in the room could perhaps begin to identify themselves. He was talking about the lumbering, tinkering, committed types working wholesale vegetable farms with their family in tow. The Bronx to Bat Masterson

So I tell readers I’m from the West Bronx, and even that isn’t quite true. I can’t tell them I was born west of the Missouri River, or even the mighty Mississippi. Heck, I wasn’t even born west of the Hudson River. Let me backtrack: In preparation for the publication of “Bandit Heaven” later this month, advertisements are being prepared for the print media, and some have already been posted on social media. St. Martin’s Press also has distributed several hundred ARCs, or advance review copies, to booksellers and reviewers. I (almost) blush as I report that this material includes ... by Tom Clavin

Raw Land

My friend and I watched her house burn. It was an old home and it was going quickly, and yet so slowly the loss spread. Firefighters worked to control it, to contain it. Some of her valuables could be saved, but her cats had already perished. We sat there silently; every now and then, my friend uttered, gently, “Oh, oh, oh.” To which I answered, “I know, I know.” It was a small but grand home. Grand from my perspective, because it wasn’t a farmhouse, it was a “cottage.” In the language of the nascent luxury real estate economy, “cottage” ... 25 Sep 2024 by Marilee Foster

Getting 'S-Expletive' Done

The day after Labor Day — known in the Hamptons as “Tumbleweed Tuesday” — I sat down at my desk and started knocking out things on my neglected to-do list. We had a very busy summer, starting with a puck’s wedding, sliding immediately into my 60th birthday celebration, and culminating with a blowout Labor Day weekend during which we hosted 15 people for four days. It was a fun weekend, but as we ushered our last guests out the door that Tumbleweed Tuesday, I turned around to my ransacked house. Beach towels peppered the floors. Dishes perched precariously in the ... by Tracy Grathwohl

A Solar Hotspot

“I still get the same thrill as when I did my first solar installation in 1980,” Dean Hapshe was saying the other day. The sign that the energy being harvested by sunlight is exceeding what the electric grid is providing —“the utility meter going backward” — is something that “screams independence,” he says. Hapshe is the veritable dean of solar power on Long Island. This has included teaching how it’s done to solar installers here, including at the State University of New York at Farmingdale and at Long Island Power Authority seminars. He headed his own company, Majestic Son and ... by Karl Grossman
