How ‘Big Beak’ Parrott Became a Pair of Shoes

One of the joys of being a nonfiction writer is discovering characters and stories that are more amazing than fiction and that may never have been told before. Here is an example from “Bandit Heaven,” which is to be published next Tuesday. Perhaps I’ll see a few of you on that day, October 22, for a launch presentation at the Barnes & Noble in Bridgehampton at 6 p.m. Though he was born in Montbeliard, France, in 1834, by the late 1870s George “Big Beak” Parrott was a veteran American West outlaw. Perhaps his most profitable hunting ground was the Oregon ... by Tom Clavin

Signs of the Times

Election Day is a few weeks away, and Suffolk County’s landscape is again bedecked with political campaign signs. On Shelter Island in July, there was a Letter to the Editor of the Shelter Island Reporter signed by the town’s Republican and Democratic leaders and an independent candidate running for the Town Board, Lisa Shaw, noting, “We are excited that the public wants to begin showing support for their respective candidates.” But they declared: “In the spirit of keeping it neighborly and our mutual love of the beauty of this island, all the campaigns/parties have agreed to these parameters about yard ... by Karl Grossman

Gold and Red

October, with its slanted light, gives our normal landscape metallic powers: silver at twilight, golden throughout. Painters paint it, writers write it, all of us taking our time with a mental photograph of something beautiful and vast. Not a lady, not a singular dancing man on your 2-inch screen, it is not easy to record. You must find the colors or the words to capture a whole planet under a unique sky, turning, like a top — we hope, a perpetual top — through the universe. Soon after sunrise, coming upon the spent sunflowers, the flock of goldfinch rise and ... 8 Oct 2024 by Marilee Foster

Rethinking ‘Marshes’

What a difference several decades have made when it comes to wetlands. At long last, there’s been a change spurred by enlightened government leadership, action by environmental organizations and, amid the climate crisis, the realization of the importance of wetlands in providing coastal resiliency in the face of climate change. Wetlands, where fish feed and breed — among other attributes — are a vital part of the environment. But for so long this was not recognized. Wetlands were dismissed as “marshes” to be filled and turned into property on which construction could take place. Studies have determined that half of ... 7 Oct 2024 by Karl Grossman

The Best Party Ever

I can’t remember the last time we had trick-or-treaters. I miss the little children dressed as wanna-be witches, princesses and superheroes, rushing to the door, yelling, “Trick or treat!” I liked dressing up as a child but not as an adult. I cringed when we received an invitation to a costume party. It seemed like such an effort, but they were always fun. Dressing as a nun was easy while I still had my college robe and fun when paired with a male dancer. I also had been Edward Scissorhands, and a member of Kiss. We had a lot of ... by Denise Gray Meehan

The Deepfake Future

The idea for the event began “percolating,” said Professor Andrea Gabor, who has a home on Shelter Island, while she and panelist Don Waisanen were co-teaching an honors class last semester at Baruch College/CUNY titled “The News Media, Toxic Sludge and the Future of Democracy.” A press release announcing the forum, which was held last week at LTV Studios in Wainscott, quoted Gabor as saying: “In the last 20 years, the U.S. has lost close to 3,000 local newspapers, or about one-third of all independent news outlets. The spread of news deserts has also fueled extremism and local divisions, fracturing ... 3 Oct 2024 by Karl Grossman

We Are Dinosaurs

Some years ago, at an old farmer’s funeral, his son, eulogizing, looked out and upon the congregation. His eyes fell on all those familiars as if we were strangers or suspects. He looked high into the balcony and repeated what he’d just said. “Some of you, here today don’t know it, but you are dinosaurs … dinosaurs.” He continued, giving fantastic details of his father’s humble and yet adventurous life. The dinosaurs in the room could perhaps begin to identify themselves. He was talking about the lumbering, tinkering, committed types working wholesale vegetable farms with their family in tow. The Bronx to Bat Masterson

So I tell readers I’m from the West Bronx, and even that isn’t quite true. I can’t tell them I was born west of the Missouri River, or even the mighty Mississippi. Heck, I wasn’t even born west of the Hudson River. Let me backtrack: In preparation for the publication of “Bandit Heaven” later this month, advertisements are being prepared for the print media, and some have already been posted on social media. St. Martin’s Press also has distributed several hundred ARCs, or advance review copies, to booksellers and reviewers. I (almost) blush as I report that this material includes ... by Tom Clavin
