Work It

For Kelsey Marechal … Change is the opportunity to try again. And it isn’t always a good thing, but change is an inevitable thing, and so at the very least we must try to “work it,” be ready for it. If you do not work it, change is likely to sweep you along, depositing you where it sees fit. Of course, you could be hydroplaning … and no amount of steering will help. The closure of Kmart was the inevitable change, because the potato farm, Woolco, Caldor all failed, too. Why continue the century-long trend? Why not imagine this prime, ... by Marilee Foster

The Far Side

No rain for over three months, and we can be glad this isn’t the growing season: The fall crops are inclined to idle, grow slow, as dew is enough to keep the spinach alive. But the aphids don’t die, and nor are they washed away. I go out before daybreak, and the sky is so clear that the satellites, slow-moving buoys, stand out. A launch is no longer a strange sight. A string of them, being towed into Earth’s low orbit, ascend into the eastern sky. It is still night, and the tremendous noise that must exist is silent. Behind ... 19 Nov 2024 by Marilee Foster

An Enduring American Story

Last month marked the 85th anniversary of the release of my favorite film. Given the election results and concerns about political integrity, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” is more relevant than ever. After the director Frank Capra got hold of an unpublished short story about a young senator from Montana, his intention was to make a sequel to his “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” with Gary Cooper reprising his role as Longfellow Deeds. Because Cooper was unavailable, Capra then saw it immediately as a vehicle for Jimmy Stewart. Capra said of him: “He looked like the country kid, the idealist. ... by Tom Clavin

The Man for the Job?

The views are certainly mixed, to put it mildly, about President-elect Donald Trump announcing last week that he would nominate Lee Zeldin, the former congressman from Suffolk County, to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, based in Farmingdale, told Newsday: “The good news is: He lives here. He understands that climate change is real. He understands the value of protecting coastal waters, estuaries, the marine environment and drinking water … We’re hoping, and we need Lee Zeldin to bring perspective and strength to the Trump administration to do the right ... by Karl Grossman

Houses, Not Farms

Anytime the headwinds got too fierce, my father would talk about selling what he owned and moving the farm elsewhere. At a family meeting, his cousins unfurled a subdivision map of the farmland behind our house. A family is no way to own a farm: It makes the land vulnerable to all the things families are vulnerable to. Mainly, time — it wears away at relationships; a hundred years on, brothers are now very distant cousins. Corporations have proven themselves better suited for the business growing food than farmers. As they say, money rules. Down in Delaware, or out in ... 12 Nov 2024 by Marilee Foster

The Pity Party

For decades, three friends and I have met at Le Soir in Blue Point for seasonal dinners. Since I had the longest ride, I stayed overnight at my librarian friend’s house. That way I could enjoy a straight-up dirty martini with three olives. Back then, I was divorced, and my librarian confidante was between husbands, so our conversations focused on money and men. Now money and medical are prime concerns. However, one of the quartet insisted that any talk about medical matters be limited to the Ten-Minute Rule. An “organ recital” wouldn’t leave enough time to laugh and to discuss ... 11 Nov 2024 by Denise Gray Meehan

Intense Views

The political campaign signs along Suffolk County roads declared: “Suffolk is Trump Country.” And, indeed, in last week’s election, Suffolk County was Trump country — as was much of the United States. His vote here for president heading the Republican ticket was substantial: 402,924, compared to 323,473 for Democrat Kamala Harris, or 55 to 44 percent. That’s an increase from 2020, when Trump bested Democrat Joe Biden in the county by 232 votes, and 2016, when he won by 46,619 votes in Suffolk County over Democrat Hillary Clinton. I’ve written about outcomes of elections on Long Island for decades, and ... by Karl Grossman

VIEWPOINT: Why Early Climate Talks With Kids Matter

I didn’t know what climate change was until I was 14. Sure, I’d heard the term tossed around on News 12, at school and across social media, but it was just a buzzword, nothing I could relate to in a meaningful way. I avoided looking further into it, afraid of feeling overwhelmed and anxious. As I grew older, the urgency of the climate crisis became impossible to ignore, and I knew I had to take action. This realization led me to pursue environmental studies in college. But, by then, I felt like I had joined the fight too late. This ... by Milla Douer
