A state court has ruled that the two electronic billboards on Sunrise Highway built by the Shinnecock Nation should not have been constructed without approval from the New York State Department of Transportation. The ruling has buoyed hopes of neighbors and some town officials that the tribe's construction of a gas station at the Westwoods property, and future plans for a hotel and convention center, can be halted.

A court issued an injunction against the operation of the electronic billboards, but the state has taken no action to shut them down.
