With Election Day on Tuesday, November 5, Southampton will see new and familiar faces among East End officials. Yet one unfortunate constant remains in Southampton Village: an ineffectual administration led by Mayor Bill Manger. Under Manger’s leadership, critical issues like traffic mitigation, environmental and water quality protection, overdevelopment, controversy over Pond Lane, and the decline of our downtown have been ignored or poorly addressed, leaving our community in a state of stagnation. I wrote a note to the Southampton Town superintendent of highways concerning the condition of the street I live on, stating that I had recently tripped on rough pavement. Within days, a crew came by to patch the road, and as I thanked the crew, they asked, “Was it you that wrote that letter?” I answered yes — and they apologized for neglecting not only my road but adjacent roads as well. On the last Saturday in October, in Southampton Village, I attended the annual Little Lucy’s Halloween Pet Parade at Agawam Park. This event drew hundreds of people to the park (and throughout the village), with their four-legged friends — all dressed up and vying for placement as star of the parade. There were prizes for costumes, live music and food trucks for the attendees to enjoy. Little Lucy’s is the quintessential pet shop on Jobs Lane, and the proprietor, Patricia Volonnino-Hurley, puts this event on every year with help from volunteers. On Wednesday, October 30, the Mariners Patriot Club at Southampton High School held its 15th annual Appreciation Dinner for our local veterans.
