Crosswalks Needed

I was very happy to hear that Red Horse Market will be moving into the old Schmidt’s location [“Owners of Red Horse Market Buy Building That Was Former Home of Schmidt’s in Southampton,” 27east.com, November 22]. When they moved out, Schmidt’s left a big gap in Southampton Village.

I would suggest that in order to show support, the village could put in a crosswalk between the post office and their location. I know Dennis Schmidt had tried, unsuccessfully, to get this done. Hopefully, that would cut down on the number of people I see driving across the street from one location to another. It’s really not a lot to ask, considering that when Citarella moved in the village changed the entire traffic pattern in the village to accommodate Citarella. And they didn’t even have their own parking lot to maintain — the village supplied that.

And, speaking of crosswalks, I noticed they installed one on North Main Street, slightly north of Bowden Square. They also have one on the west end of Bowden Square crossing North Sea Road, to the corner with Dime Bank. It would be a good idea to connect these two crossings with a sidewalk on the north side of Bowden Square. There’s parking all along the north side of Bowden Square (frequently full) in addition to a large parking lot there. A sidewalk might help keep some of the people off the street, and a crosswalk could be put in to the entrance of the restaurant. This restaurant location is one of the most iconic restaurant landmarks in the village.

Connecting the two crosswalks would also be appreciated by those of us who enjoy walking through the village.
