David M. Petrie Jr. dies at 61

Former Hampton Bays resident David M. Petrie Jr. of Highmount, New York, died on November 19. He was 61.

Mr. Petrie was a retired title insurance executive and most recently became a snowboard instructor at Belleayre Mountain in Highmount. Remembered for his love of snowboarding and his love for his “mountain family,” he was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fly fisherman.

During the summer, he worked as an assistant caretaker at the Woodland Valley Campground. He was also president of the Phoenicia Fish and Game Association and a member of the Woodstock American Legion and VFW Post 2837 in Shandaken, New York.

He is survived by his wife, Catharine King-Petrie of Hampton Bays; a son, David M. Petrie III of Albany; a sister, Joann M. Walter of Coram; three nephews, Sean M. Walter of Wading River, James M. Walter of Rocky Point and Patrick J.T. Walter; a niece, Katie M. Walter; and a godson, David Krieg.

The family received visitors on November 22 at McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Funeral services were held on November 23 at St. Isidore’s Roman Catholic Church, also in Riverhead. Interment followed at East Marion Community Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
