Denise Babinski of Eagleville, Missouri, died on September 13 in the comfort of her home. She was 82.

Born on August 22, 1942, in Riverhead, she was the beloved daughter of Joseph and Jessie Naugles. Her childhood was spent amidst the nurturing environment of her family’s potato farm, where she developed a lifelong passion for farming and a deep connection to the land.

On January 14, 1961, she married the love of her life, Andrew Babinski Sr., in Riverhead. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey, sharing 51 years of love and partnership before his passing in 2012. Their life together was marked by hard work, faith, and devotion to family. They built a successful farming life, raising cattle, dairy, and potatoes on Long Island for over three decades. In 1995, seeking new horizons, they moved west with their family, settling on a farm near Eagleville, Missouri, where they continued their agricultural legacy.

A devout member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Bethany, Missouri, her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She found great joy in her church community and served as a guiding light to all who knew her. In addition to her role in the church, she was deeply committed to her local community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Harrison County Community Hospital District since 2001. Her leadership and dedication to the health and well-being of her neighbors was a testament to her generous spirit.

Her greatest pride, however, was her family, and her memory will live on through the lives she touched, and her legacy of faith, love, and community will never be forgotten, her family said.

She is survived by her children, Andrew Babinski Jr. (Linda) of Martinsville, Missouri, Joseph Babinski (Erica) of Eagleville, Missouri, and Joannie Meyer (Michael) of Westhampton Beach; and her grandchildren, Victor and Thomas Babinski, Michael Anthony, Morgan, and Matthew Meyer, Olivia (Kason) Mathes and Nicholas Babinski.

She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Babinski Sr.; her brothers, Joseph and Thomas Naugles; her sister, Irene Bialeski; and her parents, Joseph and Jesse Naugles.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate her life will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, September 19, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Bethany, Missouri, under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home, of Bethany, Missouri. Internment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Eagleville, Missouri. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, at the Roberson Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Harrison County Community Hospital Foundation, in care of Roberson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 46, Bethany, MO 64424. Online condolences may be left at robersonfuneralhome.com.

More Housing, More 'Affordable' Housing Would Help Hampton Bays, Not Hurt It, Experts Say

Affordable housing advocates and experts made a pitch to Hampton Bays residents last week that increasing affordable housing opportunities and the density of housing in what is already the South Fork’s most populated hamlet would not mean overcrowding, quality-of-life issues and rising taxes, but, instead would result in bursting vitality and better circumstances for the people already living there. The hamlet has been embroiled in a debate over the redevelopment of the downtown, which a developer has said needs to have dozens or hundreds of apartments incorporated into it in order to make it viable and vibrant, and residents have ... 18 Sep 2024 by Michael Wright

Potential Game-Winning Field Goal Is Blocked as Bonac Football Nearly Upsets Host Comsewogue in Season Opener

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton football team put host Comsewogue on upset alert all throughout the Friday night tilt in Port Jefferson Station, but ultimately the Warriors prevailed in the low-scoring 7-6 affair. Comsewogue was ranked fifth in a highly competitive Division III coming into this season, and on top of that was heavily favored, 92 percent to be exact, by the Newsday staff to win the game, but the Bonackers showed, on the road no less, that they will be no pushover this season. Bad Credit

New rules imposed this year by the state in an effort to let consumers know when they are paying a credit card surcharge at a store or restaurant, while well-intentioned, fall short of their intended goal and have left business owners reeling at a time when the post-pandemic recovery continues. The end result of these new rules may just amount to a 4 percent “inflation,” as businesses simply increase prices across the board to account for the surcharge fees. In a nutshell, the new rules state that if a business is passing the surcharge — typically about 4 percent of ... by Editorial Board

Happy Times

Finally, the shoulder season gods smiled on the South Fork and provided not just accommodating but absolutely perfect weather for the weekend’s two big events, HarborFest in Sag Harbor and the San Gennaro Festival in Hampton Bays, which happened to fall on the same September weekend this year. As a result, both events attracted the kinds of crowds event planners dream of, both in numbers and in temperament. Families were eager to enjoy one last true summer weekend of fun, and they got the sun and warmth to go with it, without a drop of rain to dampen the enthusiasm. ... by Editorial Board
