Despite the threat of thunderstorms and rough seas, the Hampton Lifeguard Association went ahead with its second annual Run-Swim-Run competition on Friday at Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett. While the turnout wasn’t what was expected because of those factors, it was still very much a successful event.
The rain that was forecast held off, and thanks to 30 to 40 HLA members pitching in, whether it be on jet skis or paddle boards in the break and everywhere in between, event coordinator Bella Tarbet said that helped make the decision to go on with the races. The event is to help raise money to send HLA guards — comprising guards from throughout the South Fork — to the United States Lifesaving Association’s National Lifeguard Championships, which are August 9-12 in Virginia Beach.
“The inaugural event was a huge success and so we were excited to hold it again this year,” Tarbet said. “Whereas last year we had a beautiful 70-degree night and clean, green flag surf conditions, last Friday we wavered over canceling the event because of storms, choppy waters and big waves.
“Luckily the rain held off for the race itself, and with the help of a multitude of members of the Hampton Lifeguard Association, we were able to hold the race.”
There were actually two separate races, a “full race,” which was a half-mile run, quarter-mile swim and quarter-mile run, and then a “mini race,” which was a quarter-mile run, eighth-of-a-mile swim and eighth-of-a-mile run. The length of the races changed compared to last year’s inaugural race, Tarbet said, due to the rough conditions.
“We didn’t want swimmers going against the strong sweep,” she explained. “It was amazing to watch as many competitors came back after finishing the full race to help younger competitors complete the mini race.”
There were two categories in the full race, relay and individual. For the relay, one person ran the first leg, another swam and a third ran the last leg.
The first place relay was the town lifeguard team consisting of Brodie Schneider, Patty O’Donnell and Colin Schaefer. For the individual full race, the first place finisher was Liam Knight, second was Miles Menu and third was Nicky Chavez. In the mini race, first place was Mason Curry, followed by Cybelle Curry, and in third place was Lily Brown.
“The event turned into a great night thanks to a coordinated effort from so many people involved in the HLA community,” Tarbet said. “The turnout was a bit lower than expected due to the conditions, and so we will continue to fundraise until the national tournament.”
