Donna Broniecki of Southampton and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, died peacefully on March 22 at the East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue, surrounded by her family. She was 80.

She was the daughter of the late Rodman Terry and Rolene Stuebe.

She moved to Hampton Bays during high school. After graduation, she attended Mount Ida College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Once she met Steve Broniecki, they married on April 4, 1964. Exactly to the day a year later, their daughter, Stephanie was born.

She began working in the court system and dedicated her career to public service, retiring as a senior court clerk in the criminal courts of Riverhead. She was known for her intelligence, dedication to her community, and professionalism, as well as her sense of humor. Many people in Southampton will remember her dedication to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, volunteering for Huggy Bears, the U.S. Open, and fundraising for the Dominican Sisters.

Outside of work, she lived life fully. She was an avid tennis and golf player, an enthusiastic traveler, and a voracious reader. She especially treasured her winters in Florida and the many adventures (Morocco, Russia, camping on the beach, and cruising the Caribbean, just to name a few) she shared with her friends and family.

Anyone who spent time with her may remember her enjoying casinos and laughing at many jokes, her family said, noting that her kindness, strength, and deep love for her family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Above all, she was devoted to her family.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Stephen J. Broniecki; her sister Debra Owen; and nephew Kyle Owen. She is survived by her daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Mike Neill; her granddaughters Caitie (married to Andrew Blakely) Taylor, and Lauryn; her brother-in-law Billy Owen; nephew Neal Owen and his wife Alicia, and their children Avery, Will, and Emma.

After a private cremation and burial at Calverton National Cemetery, the family will receive visitors on April 5, at 1 p.m. at 72 Henry Road in Southampton.

Clean Campaign

I’m so proud of John Leonard. I’m so proud of being a Democrat. They ran a “clean” campaign and stuck to the facts and issues and not to character attacks. My takeaway: When you are not adequately qualified, a candidate and their party too often resort to personal mudslinging. My other takeaway: that the toxicity on the national level has infiltrated local politics as well. My hope has been, especially since Donald Trump, the sequel, that voters have become tired of character assassination and want to move forward with civility, mutual respect and a commitment to compromise in order to ... by Staff Writer

A Rat in the Coop

Because we have chickens, we have rats. When people who don’t have a farm tell me they are getting chickens, I try to warn them. That’s nice, I say. But be ready for some rats. You might want to consider getting a terrier. This is a messy lifestyle, and your Maltese won’t be able to manage it alone, if at all. As rats are associated with at least a few plagues, cities rightly fear them. In the countryside, we do our part to control them. Each night, when we go to close the coops, there is a hunt. We once ... by Marilee Foster
