Dorothy “Dot” Walsh
Dorothy “Dot” Walsh (née White) of Water Mill died Friday, February 25 at Southampton Hospital. She was 84.
Born March 18, 1926, to James L. White and Alice Jessup White, Ms. Walsh graduated from Southampton High School in 1944 and Plattsburg Teachers College in 1948. She taught home economics in Greenport and at Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, schools.
Ms. Walsh met her future husband, John, in New Jersey on a blind date. They were married on June 26, 1954. John was in the Army and many happy years of travel followed, survivors said. Their travels led them to New Jersey, Virginia, New Mexico, Italy, France, and Germany. They settled back in Water Mill in 1967.
Ms. Walsh enjoyed a wide range of crafts including embroidery, painting, quilting, beading, and sewing. One that remained constant was knitting; she loved to knit.
She was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, including its Women’s Association, working on many projects for the Christmas sale, and collecting for mission projects. She also volunteered as the church librarian. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all, survivors said.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Walsh Sr., great-granddaughter, Brianna Olcott, and her sister, Helen Ryder. She is survived by her children, Toni Walsh Masaitis and her husband Ben, John Walsh Jr. and his wife Pam, James Walsh and his wife Marliss, and Teri Walsh Hurley and her husband Tim; grandchildren, Gabrielle, Lindsay, Jessica, Patrick, Sarah, James Jr., Morgan, and Timmy; great-grandchildren Nicholas, Holly, and Parker; a niece Alicia Ryder; and her friend Alice Redding.
Visitation was held Sunday, February 27, at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. Funeral services were held Monday, February 28, at First Presbyterian Church of Southampton. Interment followed at Flying Point Cemetery.
