Dorothy M. Hines

Dorothy M. Hines, a longtime resident of Scarsdale and Quogue, died at her home in Quogue on September 12. She was 90.

Ms. Hines was the last surviving member of her first generation Irish family.

More than 50 years ago, she was drawn by her love of the ocean to the beautiful landscape of Quogue. Family and friends especially remember her love of bird-watching in her own backyard, most notably a pair of cardinals that she favored.

In addition to her interest in golf, she served on several race and social committees at the Shinnecock Yacht Club and later became an honorary member.

Over the years, she and her husband, Bill Hines, traveled extensively, crossing the Atlantic Ocean a total of 34 times, survivors said. Among her other activities, she enjoyed challenging herself to complete the New York Times crossword puzzle, in particular the Sunday edition. She was also a competitive and enthusiastic Scrabble player, frequently establishing herself as the “Scrabble Master” of her family.

In later years, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and family members said that she will always be remembered as having an easy-going nature, good sense of humor and beautiful smile.

She is survived by four daughters, Alice Hines of California, Dorothy McCartney of Chappaqua, Margaret Hines of Massachusetts and Elizabeth Battison of California; and two sons, William Hines and Robert Hines, both of Massachusetts.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Bill Hines, two brothers and four sisters.

Services were private. In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, PO Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
