Dr. Martin Lawrence Stone

Dr. Martin Lawrence Stone, a professor and chairman emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at the Stony Brook University Medical School, died at his home in Southampton on November 1 after a short illness. He was 92.

The son of Dr. Isaac and Margaret Goldstein, he was born on June 11, 1920. Dr. Stone’s nearly 60-year career in medicine led to his international recognition as a clinician, researcher and professor in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

His numerous achievements and appointments have included serving as president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, editor-in-chief of the ACOG Update, program chair of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics and chair of the American College of Surgeons Advisory Committee in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

He served two terms on the Residency Review Committee and as a principal investigator for the NIH-sponsored multiple institutional study on cerebral palsy. Dr. Stone is the author of two textbooks and more than 84 peer-reviewed articles relating to ob-gyn. In 1993, he received the APGO Excellence in Teaching Award, and in 1997 he received the APGO/Wyeth Career Achievement Award. In 2006, ACOG District II awarded Dr. Stone its Lifetime Achievement Award for his tireless service to the field of obstetrics and gynecology. In June, 2012, APGO established the Martin L. Stone M.D. Faculty Development Seminar in perpetuity, as the opening lecture for its annual faculty meeting.

Dr. Stone received his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1944, served in the United States Army and completed his residency at New York Medical College and affiliated hospitals. He was appointed professor and chairman of the departments of obstetrics and gynecology at New York Medical College in 1956.

In 1978 Dr. Stone accepted the position of professor and chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at the newly opened Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He held that position until his official retirement in 1995, and subsequently filled that role three more times on an interim basis. Dr. Stone also served as a consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.

Dr. Stone belonged to more than 15 professional societies, received numerous awards and honors, was editor of more than eight peer-published reviews and journals and was appointed and served on more than 60 professional committees, councils and boards as either member or chairman. His community involvement spanned his professional career including at Planned Parenthood, the American Cancer Society, the New York State State Hospital Review and Planning Council, the Town of Southampton Business Advisory Council and the Peconic Health Corporation. He also served as a 15-year member of the board of directors of Southampton Hospital and emeritus board member of the East Hampton Healthcare Foundation. A winter resident of Rancho Mirage, California, Dr. Stone was regularly seen each week at both cancer and grand rounds at Eisenhower Medical Center.

Dr. Stone is survived by his wife, Nancy G. Stone; his son, Robert and his spouse Ariel of Tennessee; a grandson, Jeremy Stone and his spouse Becca; great-granddaughters, Lily and Paisley of Tennessee; granddaughter, Jessica Stone Woods and her spouse Rob; great-grandsons, Davis and Harper of South Carolina; grandchildren, Shannon Stone Glover of Tennessee and Julian Agnew of South Carolina.

A memorial service will be held on December 17, 2012, followed by a celebration of his life at the Harmonie Club in New York.
