LaLota, Avlon on the Environment and Water Quality

Republican U.S. Representative Nick LaLota and Democrat John Avlon, who is challenging him for the 1st District congressional seat, agree that environmental conservation and water quality are critically important but differ in approach, based on separate interviews conducted in August and September. Many environmental issues are under a county government’s jurisdiction, the Republican incumbent and his Democratic challenger said, but both agreed that the federal government can play an important role in environmental stewardship. “I’ve taken a lead primarily from [former State] Senator Ken LaValle, who was never shy about standing up for the environment,” LaLota said. “Where the rubber ... by Christopher Walsh

We Mark Our Ballot

For the House Every single national election is important, but it’s not hyperbolic to say that this is an election like no other, and it requires a level of participation and engagement far beyond a typical November vote. It’s always important to have a healthy turnout, but in 2024 the nation’s future is on the ballot to a degree that we haven’t seen in recent history. This one will truly matter, for years to come. The bald truth is that Donald Trump is uniquely unfit to serve as president, considering character, demeanor and personal history. His four years in the ... by Editorial Board

Turn Over Your Ballot, Local Propositions Require Votes Too

In addition to the big names and big stakes on the front of next week’s ballot, voters in Southampton and East Hampton towns will each be presented with three propositions, or proposals on the back of the ballot. The first proposal, Proposal 1, is an amendment to the State Constitution called the Equal Rights Amendment that in a technical sense prohibits discrimination against a person on the basis of ethnicity, origin, age, disability and sex, including gender identity. But the proposal also contains a provision that, effectively, guarantees women the right to seek an abortion in the state and attempts ... by Michael Wright

State Audit Asserts Southampton School District Overtaxed Residents While Accumulating Cash Reserves

A New York State audit has found that, over the past five years, taxpayers living in the Southampton School District were overtaxed due to the Southampton School Board and district officials consistently underestimating revenue and overestimating expenses in the annual budgets, while accumulating $21.6 million in cash reserves. Additionally, the report from the office of state Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli found that, from July 2018 to June 2023, the district appropriated money that was not used to pay operational expenses and made year-end unbudgeted transfers to reserves, totaling $5.3 million. “This should have resulted in annual operating deficits equal to ... by Michelle Trauring
