Dr. William Muir Manger of New York and Southampton died peacefully at home on February 28. He was 103.
A professor of clinical medicine, he was born in Greenwich, Connecticut on August 13, 1920.
He graduated from St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Yale University, he graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, from which he received the award for distinguished achievements in clinical medicine.
He was a U.S. Navy officer from 1942-1949. In 1950, he became a fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he earned his Ph.D. and received the Distinguished Alumni Award.
He came to Southampton in 1958, and purchased his home in the village in 1960. Later, he became affiliated with Southampton Hospital.
In 1973, he and his siblings sold the Manger hotel chain, for which he served as vice chairman. In 1977, he founded the National Hypertension Association, of which he was chairman until 1997.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lynn Sheppard; his sons William Jr., Stewart, and Charles; his daughter, Lilian Fleming and son-in-law, Porter Fleming; and three grandchildren.
