The East Hampton/Pierson girls swim team honored five of its six seniors prior to its final home meet of the season at the East Hampton YMCA on October 13, and although the ceremonies charged up the Bonackers and those in attendance, the team suffered a 92-73 loss to Sayville/Bayport-Blue Point.
Although a victory would have been the cherry on top to an otherwise eventful night, the reigning League III champion Golden Flashes, who placed fourth overall in the county last season, proved they’re still the team to beat.
It was the first League III loss of the season for the Bonackers, who are 2-1 in league meets, 3-2-1 overall.
“Based upon our meets from the past, we were expecting, and ready, for the challenge,” East Hampton head coach Craig Brierley said. “Throughout the meet, there was great energy and excitement from both teams, and the spectators, too. The competitors fed off of that energy and pushed themselves in many close races which resulted in many best times. Sayville proved to be the better team … though the Bonac girls never gave up and gave fantastic efforts in every race. It was a fun meet with great displays of sportsmanship and lots of meet experience gained in the process.”
Alyssa Brabant, Jane Brierley, Carolina Condon, Maddie Elflein, and Cami Hatch were all honored prior to the meet. Sophie Tucci is also a senior, but was unable to attend, according to Coach Brierley. After Izzy Caplin, Dakota Quackenbush, Ruby Tyrrell and Coach Thomas sang the national anthem, all five girls did the traditional “Senior Swim.”
“It was a special, bittersweet moment, and with the amazing help of their teammates, it was very memorable,” Coach Brierley said. “We wish our seniors the best of luck in the next chapter of their lives and we are blessed with all the memories that they have given to our program over the years.”
Following the meet, the captains chose, as they do after every meet, a Swimmer of the Meet. They chose East Hampton sophomore Ava Castillo for her enthusiasm, particularly when she’s not racing. Castillo finished with personal best times in three of her four events and helped the 200-yard medley relay to a second place finish, finished fourth in the 100 butterfly, and was a part of the 200 free relay team’s second place finish.
“She will always have a smile on her face, a kind word to lift someone up, and a loud voice to cheer during a race,” Coach Brierley said. “When it is Ava’s turn to race, she is a fierce competitor and will always do her best.”
East Hampton wrapped up the regular season on Wednesday at Lindenhurst after which it will prepare for the League III Championships, which are October 28 at 4:30 p.m. at West Islip High School. The Section XI Swim Championships will follow on November 6 at Stony Brook University.
