Harmful algal blooms have been detected in a handful of South Fork water bodies in recent weeks. Surface water samples from Kellis Pond in Bridgehampton, Mill Creek in Water Mill and Old Town Pond in Southampton taken by SUNY Stony Brook water monitors were found to contain blue-green algae blooms, Suffolk County reported. Canal Lock Repairs Completed, Safe for Boat Traffic Again

Boats are again able to safely transit the Shinnecock Canal this weekend after a county contractor completed repairs to a broken gate in the canal's mechanical lock that had created hazardous conditions since early last month. The U.S. Coast Guard and Southampton Town Marine Patrol said that the lock and tidal gates were again operating normally as of Wednesday, after only about three weeks of disruption.
