Edward G. Tuohy, formerly of Sag Harbor, died peacefully on January 4 at his home in Mount Vision, New York, after a brief battle with cancer. The love of his life, Suzy, and their children were by his side. He was 64.

He was born in Brooklyn to Edward F. and Joan Tuohy. He attended LaSalle Academy High School in Manhattan and attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

He relocated to North Haven when his family moved from Brooklyn in the late 1970s. He immediately found work as a carpenter. He was a master craftsman.

He would later attend the Suffolk County Police Academy and became a police officer. He started his police career in the Village of Southampton. He would then transfer to the Village of Sag Harbor, where he worked until his retirement.

He was a dedicated member of the Sag Harbor Volunteer Fire Department for almost 30 years. He was a member of the Otter Hose Company 3 and Gazelle Hose Company 1. He served as captain for a time and was also a member of the Rescue Squad. He was proud to follow in the footsteps of his father, a retired Fire Department of New York firefighter.

Tuohy was a gifted craftsman. He was a master at finishing work on construction sites. He would return to this work once he retired from the police department. He was also known for making custom fishing poles. He enjoyed drawing firetrucks and crafting helmet badges. He was an avid reader, especially history books.

Tuohy was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He would spend many hours passing down his knowledge to his sons and grandchildren. There were many fishing trips with his father, brothers, sons and grandchildren.

He was also a troop leader for his son’s Boy Scout troop for several years. No one could cook hotdogs like him. The question after every Harborfest was, “Did you cook more dogs than last year?”

He was adored by his family and in return was adored by them, his family said.

He was predeceased by his parents Joan and Edward F. Tuohy; and his sister Jane Tuohy.

He is survived by the love of his life, Helen (Suzy) Tuohy; children Edward J. Tuohy and William Tuohy (Dawn), all of Mount Vision; and Timothy Tuohy (Colleen) of Center Moriches; brother Michael Tuohy (Stacey) of Monticello, New York; Timothy J. Tuohy of Sag Harbor and Eileen M. Tuohy of Sag Harbor; two grandchildren, Jonathan and James; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends.

A fire department memorial service is being planned for sometime in February at the Sag Harbor Fire Department Headquarters.

Montaukett Reinstatement Bill Is Sent to Hochul

The State Legislature delivered a bill that provides for reinstatement of recognition and acknowledgment of the Montaukett Indian Nation to Governor Kathy Hochul last Thursday, December 12.
