Edward John O’Shea Jr. of Jewett, New York, and Callawassie Island, South Carolina, died on December 6, 2023. He was 92.
Born on December 4, 1931, to parents Edward and Grace O’Shea of Rockaway, he attended St. John’s Prep in Brooklyn, played college basketball while attending Notre Dame, graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Dentistry and opened four orthodontic offices on Long Island.
In addition to his practice, he was immensely proud of his dedicated 29 years of military service in the United States Navy, where he advanced to the rank of Rear Admiral in the Dental Corps (Active Duty 1958-1960 and Reserve 1961-1988) and earned the Legion of Merit. He also served as a recruiter for candidates applying to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Committed to his faith and philanthropy, he was the president of the Long Island Chapter of Catholic Charities. His greatest talent was helping others, fixing problems (and anything broken in the house), and giving encouragement as a pillar of strength and stability.
He is survived by his six children, Nancy O’Shea, Kevin (Susan) O’Shea, Megan (Lawrence) O’Shea-Megale, Maura (Dave) Fletcher, Kathleen O’Shea-Paesano, Christine (Ashby) Dodge-O’Shea; his 16 grandchildren, Lauren, Ryan, Kyler, Katie, Margaret, Kelley, Shea, Annie, Will, Madeline, Charles, Sophia, Mary, Bella, Sawyer, Sullivan; and his great-grandchildren, Michaela, Emma, and Jack. He also leaves behind his sister, Rita O’Shea, of Southampton. He was predeceased by his wife, Judy; and his grandson, Matthew.
Funeral services will be held on December 18, at 11 a.m., at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations to American Boy (americanboy.org) in memory of his grandson Matthew, would be appreciated.
