Emil J. Misisco Sr. passed away peacefully at home on December 26. He was 96.

Born in Long Island City, he was the youngest of Michael and Antoinette’s five children. He attended Brooklyn Poly Tech High School and served in the U.S. Navy for two years. After his service, he attended Brooklyn Poly Tech College on a GI Bill.

His business career began at the Bulova Watch Company. He later served as staff vice president of quality at North American Philips Corporation for 37 years, until his retirement in the early 1990s. His global business travel was extensive, with yearly trips to Europe and Asia.

In 1952, he met the love of his life, Pat, at a church dance in the Bronx. They married a year later and remained inseparable until she died in 2018.

He will be remembered as a quiet, intelligent gentleman and an avid reader who was always impeccably dressed. He cherished spending time at the beach with his family and had an unlimited love for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom he wanted to ensure knew he was their “best friend.”

Together, they raised five children (and married): Michael (Kathy), Mariellen (Keith), Matthew (Marie), Thomas (Karen), and EJ (Carrie). Emil and Pat resided in Scarsdale and spent almost every summer in Quogue with his children, their 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren who survived him.

Donations can be made to the East End Hospice, 481 Westhampton-Riverhead Rd., Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 (EEH.org).

Pity the poor horseshoe crab. It is, without question, a survivor almost beyond compare. Consider this: There are fossils of the creature dating back 445 million years. Dinosaurs arrived about 200 million to 250 million years ago — which means the time between us and dinosaurs is equal to the time between dinosaurs and the earliest horseshoe crabs. And they’re still here, nearly unchanged. But they finally may have met their match. The American horseshoe crab has “vulnerable” status, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The population faces a whole series of challenges, including sea-level rise, coupled ... by Editorial Board
