Esther Glazer of Remenburg died on December 27, 2018, just one week after her 95th birthday.

Born in Brooklyn on December 21, 1923, to Matilda and Louis Haber, she was the younger sister of two brothers, Morris and Lenny, both of whom predeceased her. In 1948 she married her next-door neighbor, William Glazer, who her family described as the “love of her life.” They had three children, all of whom survive, Louis (Paula), Susan (Mel), and Paul. They were married for 61 years until he died in May 2009. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew (Jennie), Jackie (Josh) and Jamie (Sam); and a great-grandchild, Hendrix.

Survivors said her life centered on her children but that she found time to pursue her passions, making many friends, of all ages, along the way. She regularly played bridge and hosted a weekly mah jong game in her home. She played tennis into her 80s, was active in the Remsenburg Garden Club and volunteered selflessly as a trustee for the board of the Westhampton Free Library; she was instrumental in realizing the transformation of the library to its current glory. She was a voracious reader and maintained her library relationships until the end.

A funeral was held on December 28 at Beth David Cemetery, where she was laid to rest beside her husband.

Memorial donations may be made to the Westhampton Free Library, 7 Library Avenue, Westhampton, NY 11978.

An Awful Noise

People who don’t know, ask: What is that awful noise? And then it stops. A different tree now gradually comes alive; the leaves nearly vibrate as the buzzing builds. The sound of an individual cicada is, of course, not an awful noise — it’s just loud, and the pitch is not designed to attract the human ear. The loud things we generally live with are human sounds: parties, lawnmowers, farm equipment. Yesterday, while harvesting tomatoes in the middle of a 50-acre field, I could hear, in the distance, the distinctive crunch of a house being demolished. But, other times, what ... by Marilee Foster
