Along a 1,300-foot stretch of County Road 51 in Eastport that straddles the County Road 111 underpass, PSEG Long Island will remove five tall steel poles and will run underground the transmission cable that the poles hold aloft.

PSEG installed steel poles along County Road 51 and Eastport Manor Road in 2017 to carry 69,000-volt power lines but, after community opposition, removed most of the poles on Eastport Manor Road in 2020.

One of the five poles that are now scheduled for removal has been struck by a vehicle twice since it was installed; the first time in December 2017, when the driver died after the vehicle burst into flames. It is located near the northbound County Road 111 entrance ramp.

Two additional poles, one at each end of the 1,300-foot stretch, will be replaced by riser poles, where the transmission cable will come out of the ground to meet the poles that will remain.

According to PSEG Long Island, construction was expected to begin on March 8 and be completed by May 30, and the steel poles will be removed by June 30, at a cost of $7.64 million.
