James S. Colclough
James Stuart Colclough of Williamsburg, Virginia, and a resident of Southampton from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, died on Friday, November 23, at Reston Hospital in Virginia.
Mr. Colclough was born on August 2, 1936, to Frances and Alfred Colclough in Gouverneur. He grew up in Kingston and graduated from Kingston High School. He attended the State University of New York at Cortland and then served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1955 to 1957. After his service in the Army, Mr. Colclough completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Cortland. While at college, he majored in physical education and served as the president of Beta Phi Epsilon fraternity.
In 1960, he married Marie Lake of Flushing. Mr. Colclough worked as a physical education teacher and basketball coach at several schools in New York State. He then served as basketball coach and athletic director at Southampton College, C.W. Post College and Monmouth University. While at Southampton College, he coached the basketball team to the NCAA Division 2/3 final round. He also led the athletic program at Monmouth University from NCAA Division 2 to Division 1. He served as an executive director of the United States Tennis Association and deputy tournament referee for the U.S. Tennis Open. He retired in 1998.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Alfred Colclough of Kingston, and a brother, Walter Colclough of Saugerties. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie Colclough; two daughters, Wendy Culberson and husband Ron of Virginia; and Sande Ferreira and husband Joe of Texas; a son, Kyle Colclough, and his wife Jackie of Virginia; and seven grandchildren, Caitlin Culberson, Ryan Culberson, JJ Ferreira, Sean Ferreira, William Colclough, Annie Colclough and Kate Colclough.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 8, at 2 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Chapel in Williamsburg, Virginia.
