A pair of Westhampton Beach wrestlers finished their seasons at the Suffolk County Division I Championships, which were held February 13 and 14 at Stony Brook University.
Sal Fracapane, a senior, and Bobby Stabile, a junior, each placed second at the League V Championships at Rocky Point High School on February 4 to advance to counties.
Fracapane, competing at 160 pounds, won his first two matches at counties via pin, first defeating Islip’s Dylan McKenna in 3:03, before pinning Patchogue-Medford’s Cameron Travis in 3:25. Needing just one more victory to ensure placement, Fracapane suffered a close 8-6 loss to Comsewogue’s Jayden Salti. In wrestlebacks, Fracapane lost a 10-3 decision to Lindenhurst’s Christian Campay that ended his tournament. Salti wound up placing sixth in the county after suffering a 6-4 loss to Azariah De La Cruz of Sachem East.
Stabile, competing at 132 pounds, lost a tight 9-8 decision to Walt Whitman’s Michael McGuinness in his opening-round match and was subsequently eliminated from competition. All wrestlers at counties need to win their first round matches in order to be able to wrestleback for third place.
