Franciszek “Frank” Kandula Jr. of Hampton Bays died at his home on January 12. He was 90.
He was born in Pawlowek, Poland to Franciszek and Apolonia Kandula on January 20, 1930. He came to the United States when he was 19.
Mr. Kandula was a veteran of the Korean War. He served in the United States Army. For his service, he received the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal for Korea and the National Defense Service Medal. He served honorably in the Army, achieving the rank of corporal.
He was an active member in the Korean War Veterans Association. After serving in the military, Mr. Kandula went on to have a long career at National Golf Links and had just celebrated his 40th year of sobriety.
Mr. Kandula was an avid woodworker, fisherman, cook and animal lover — adopting dogs and getting them blessed at church. He was very dedicated to his family, friends and neighbors. He was an active member of Our Lady of Poland church, as well as the Southampton community.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Kumicz of Southampton.
He is survived by his four children, John “Dusty” Kandula, Teresa Kandula, and Elizabeth Holdsworth of Southampton, and Mary Parker of Riverhead; four grandchildren, Stephanie Speraw (Joseph) of Fayetteville, Scott Holdsworth of Southampton, Dyan Westerhoff of Baltimore, and Christopher Holdsworth; and two great-grandchildren, Rylee and Nova Holdsworth of Sag Harbor. He is also survived by his brother, Stefan Kandula of Chicago; and many generations of nieces and nephews.
Visitation was scheduled to be held at Brockett’s Funeral Home in Southampton on Thursday, January 21, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral Mass was scheduled to be celebrated at Our Lady of Poland RC Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 22, with a family interment at Calverton National Cemetery.
