Francois Pierre Louis of Quogue died peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 27. He was 93.

Louis was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France on September 4, 1929, to Georges Auguste Louis and Paule Marie Cotton d’Englesqueville. An automobile company executive, Louis came to the United States in 1955, working initially as an engineer for Cadillac in Detroit before moving to New York and working for Michelin Tire Group, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and ultimately Renault USA, where he worked from 1968 until 1994.

Just 10 years old when Paris fell to Nazi Germany, the occupation played a large role in Louis’s formative years. As a teenager, he served for the Red Cross and later served in the French Army, retiring honorably as a lieutenant.

Louis was a member of numerous organizations, including the European Institute; the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, for which he served on the Board of Directors; the Society of Automotive Engineers; Cercle des Militaires des Armees; and the Army and Navy Club.

Louis was an avid boater, spending many happy hours with family and friends on his boat on Quantuck and Shinnecock bays. Other hobbies included photography, cooking and travel.

In addition to his wife of 37 years, Mary Thames Louis, Louis is survived by his brother Bernard; daughter Veronique; stepsons George and Tim; stepdaughters Jennifer and Mary Beth; eight grandchildren; his former wife Martine; and a large, extended, loving family.

Call It What It Is

Southampton Village was originally settled in 1640 and incorporated as a village in 1894. Its bona fides as a historic place are strong, and there are notable pressures that threaten the village’s quaint roots, particularly when it comes to architecture and the design of its houses. Southampton Village has four historic districts, including the Lewis Street Expansion Area, which was designated in 1993. One district is named the Beach Road Historic District. According to a State Parks’ Historic and Natural Districts inventory form: “These large, upper-income residences were originally built by some of America’s most prominent and wealthy families (including ... by Editorial Board

Speed Kills

The death of a river otter on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike last month — the victim of nearby traffic — should serve as a wakeup call to drivers on the East End. The loss of the otter, a species that disappeared from Long Island years ago and only now making a slow comeback, highlights a growing problem: Our roads are a deadly barrier for wildlife of all kinds. Add to that the propensity for drivers to speed through the area to make up for lost time in the ever-growing congestion of South Fork commuter traffic, and it’s a disaster for ... by Editorial Board

Falling Down

First, it was the Cranberry Hole Road Bridge in Amagansett, which was closed to all traffic in May 2023, then again a few weeks later, after the road over the Long Island Rail Road tracks was deemed unsafe. The bridge, built in 1895 and renovated as recently as 2007, remains closed and likely will have to be replaced. Now, it’s the Ponquogue Bridge, a much larger 38-year-old span that was closed on February 21 after concerns about “deterioration” of the concrete girders supporting its road deck. It’s back open again, but with weight limits that will keep some important commercial ... by Editorial Board
