Gaming The System

Why should wealthy developers profit on the Shinnecock’s despair at the expense of Hampton Bays taxpayers?

There are no billionaires on Newtown Road, but you know where there might be? The list of development partners associated with the Shinnecock Nation.

For “Shinnecock Casino Hamptons,” the Nation announced their alliance with Tri-State Partners of New Jersey, the deep-pocketed owners of the Hard Rock brand.

For their 200-room hotel/convention center, they’ve named Scott Maslin of Woodglen Investments. This guy is clearly so in touch with the area that his website lists the project on “Taghakic” (sic) Bay in “South Hampton” (two words), with renderings superimposing his monstrosity casting shadows over our homes and the fragile coastal bluffs. These people couldn’t be more disconnected from Hampton Bays and average middle-class people anywhere.

Why should wealthy, out-of-town developers be allowed to game the system and profit at the expense of a middle-class neighborhood and the environment in a community that simply can’t support it, leaving all taxpayers holding the bag?
