Grace Lee White of Southampton died on January 30 at Home of the Good Shepherd in Malta, New York. She was 93.

She was born on September 20, 1929 at Southampton Hospital to Thomas and Emily Lee, who were immigrants from England. She attended Tuckahoe School and graduated from Southampton High School. In 1947, she married the late Alex G. White, and in 1956 they settled in North Sea.

She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she worked in many volunteer capacities including church school, vestry, and altar guild. In 1980, she became a licensed lay reader and administer of the chalice and faithfully served in that role for many years.

Her strong desire to help others extended beyond the church. Not only was she always ready to lend a hand to relatives and neighbors, but she often helped her husband with the numerous youth activities he organized, especially the ice skating races on Little Fresh Pond. For several years, she visited terminally ill patients through Hope for Hospice (now East End Hospice) and worked in the clothing room of Human Resources (now Heart of the Hamptons).

She is survived by her daughter Diane White (Ted Orosz) of Saratoga Springs and her son Alex R. White of Southampton; as well as her grandchildren Brooke Orosz (Leon Moy) of Verona, New Jersey and Jeremy Orosz (Stacey Decker) of Memphis; her great-grandchildren Alexander and Anastasia Moy; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Katherine (Ray) Homan, Thomas (Margaret) Lee, and Rosalie (Thomas) Curtis.

There will be a visitation at Brockett Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 1, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St John’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 2, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Sacred Hearts Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Shut It Down

The Southampton Village Board faces a tough task in addressing concerns along Somerset Avenue, and its members are taking their time in examining ways to make the curvy street, with an awkward, busy intersection with Magee Street and a twisty stretch down to Hill Street safer for both traffic and pedestrians. A roundabout, one proposal at the Magee-Somerset intersection, might make sense, considering the amount of traffic flowing through the residential street. Speed humps could be deployed, as one has been nearby on Halsey Street, to try to slow traffic a bit. But there is a larger situation, one that ... by Editorial Board
