Harry Price of Southampton died on October 16 at his home in Southampton, the same one where he was born 93 years earlier to George and Winifred (Stagg) Price. He was 93.
Mr. Price was born on October 2, 1927. After attending Southampton schools, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine in 1945. When not on ship, he farmed as the Price Brothers on North Main Street. Mr. Price went on to be the highway foreman for Southampton Town for 30 years. On the side, he worked in a wide variety of capacities: blacksmith, school bus driver, antique engine repairman, house-watcher, sailor, etc.
As his father before him, Mr. Price was deeply committed to service. He was a member of the Southampton Fire Department, Agawam Hose Company, for 62 years. He instilled that same sense of duty to his children and grandchildren who between them have over a century of continuous volunteer service to the Southampton Fire Department.
Mr. Price was never happier than when he was with his family on the water: boating, clamming or scalloping in the bay or ice-boating on Mecox. He was one of seven founders of the Bullhead Yacht Club in 1953, and served as commodore and treasurer.
Mr. Price was predeceased by his parents; his sister Gwen Halsey; his brother Robert (killed in action during WWII); and his grandson Sam.
He is survived by his wife Beverly; son Robert and daughter-in-law Susan; son David and daughter-in-law Marina; daughter Karen and faithful friend Crumpet; grandson Thomas; granddaughter Madeline; brother Norman; and extended family of four nieces, one nephew, and one cousin.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, at the Southampton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Southampton Fire Department Benevolent Fund, PO Box 499, Southampton, 11969 or Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance, PO Box 832, Southampton 11969 would be appreciated by the family.
