Hazardous Parking

Maybe two weeks ago, as I drove to work, I thought it odd that going north on Route 24 in Hampton Bays/Flanders that in the midst of a blinding curve, where the south double speeding lane was, there were cars going north crossing the double-yellow line to avoid what appeared to be a county vehicle parked, with no warning, no cones, halfway parked in the single lane heading north rather than the breakdown lane. I don’t know? To cut grass? That vehicle was halfway into the lane going north. The single lane. Not in the breakdown lane.

I called police to mention a traffic safety hazard. The dispatcher wanted cross streets, intersections, etc. The location wasn’t close to any intersections, yet I said, as Route 24 is simply straight, “Just have an officer drive down Route 24 to see. Drivers have to cross the double-yellow line at a curve to avoid the vehicle.”

No, the dispatcher said — we need cross streets.

I gave up, as technically I was on the phone while driving. I said, “Never mind,” and hung up.

Thanks for looking out for us, Southampton Town Police Department. Sorry I didn’t have a cross street. Yet, thank God, no accidents happened.
