I would like to thank Drew Budd for his well-written piece concerning Herm Lamison’s 500th win last week [“Southampton’s Herm Lamison Wins 500th Career Game Monday Night,” Sports, 27east.com, January 7].
I have witnessed 95 percent of those wins as his assistant, dating back to 1991. I was honored when he approached me to help him build the program, and since I had two young boys at the time who would eventually be playing, I jumped on board. I managed the junior varsity program and assisted him at the higher level. Our coaching philosophies are a bit different, but the two have proven to be effective in producing a winning program over the last 34 years.
Coaching at the high school level, particularly the varsity level, requires countless hours in developing your program and meeting the individual needs of your players, regardless of whether it is basketball-related or not. Herm has proven to be a mentor for so many of our players, primarily minority players, because he has firm grasp of what it takes to be successful after graduating high school. He also may be the most competitive person I have ever met, which many of you can confirm by viewing how he roams the sideline. I never save him a seat on the bench.
Five hundred wins in any sport is a milestone, and I am so happy it was accomplished by someone who has given his heart and soul to the process. It was even more gratifying watching his team pour the Gatorade bucket over his head in the locker room.
