Henry M. Polhemus of Sagaponack died on December 10 at Southampton Hospital. He was 83.
Born December 18, 1925, in New York City to Henry M. and Lisa S. Polhemus, he graduated from Choate boarding school in Wallingford, Connecticut, and served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1945, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge with the Yankee Division of the 26th Infantry. Following his military service, he graduated from Amherst College in 1949.
Upon retiring from Marsh & McLennan in 1989, he indulged his love of the outdoors, coaching and playing ice hockey, fishing and hunting. Also an avid golfer, he enjoyed playing with his friends at the Bridgehampton Club. According to friends and family, he will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia of Sagaponack; a son, Frederick Polhemus of Vermont; a daughter, Sarah Bartle of North Carolina; a sister, Lisa St. John of Connecticut; and four granddaughters.
A private graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, December 18, at Edgewood Cemetery in Bridgehampton, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Bridgehampton. The Reverend Timothy Lewis will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
