History is being made in East Hampton as New York’s first offshore wind turbines are beginning to deliver electricity to homes in our local communities [“Turn, Turn, Turn: First Offshore Wind Turbine in New York Goes Live,” 27east.com, December 13].
When all 12 turbines are up and running, South Fork Wind will produce 132 megawatts of clean energy, enough to power 70,000 homes on the South Fork. This clean, renewable energy source will displace tons of carbon emissions — the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road.
The benefits to Long Islanders are multiple and urgently needed: a dependable source of electric power, cleaner air, healthier populations, a beginning of the end of our decades-long dependence on fossil fuel emissions that drive climate change, the creation of a vibrant new Long Island industry with hundreds of new career opportunities.
Offshore wind is a win-win for our local communities. We should be happy and proud that we are the first in the nation to successfully launch utility-scale offshore wind power.

Well. I wasn’t surprised at the reaction from local Democrats to the long-overdue reform of our federal government. It’s hard to fathom how defensive they are over what has always been known was a bloated, over-funded bureaucracy. I’ll take Dean...
