House of Cards

I nodded my head along to Barbara Ring’s recent Letter to the Editor [“Manhattan Calling,” Letters, April 3] and enjoyed it, as I usually do. However, Barbara got one thing wrong, or, rather, her source did: We are not stuck with John Leonard after all. Gordon Herr has frantically been having meetings to discuss John Leonard’s replacement, signaling that this race was too much for John Leonard.

The chair of the Southampton Democratic Committee and his henchwoman, unbeknownst to the committee, began having closed-door meetings with previously screened candidates to quickly find a replacement. Thank the gods, they got someone. Although the process yet again was flawed, the outcome is okay, and the replacement candidate has integrity.

Gordon Herr has gone quite dark, and very few, even in the inner circle, know what’s actually going on. One thing is clear: The rank-and-file Democrats have had enough of John Leonard, and mounting pressure to have him decline the nomination appears to have been successful.

It’s an uncertain time in the Southampton Democratic Party. When your leadership isn’t transparent, lies, deceives, hides from the public, denies and make unconscionable deals to trade lines, the stability of the house of cards you built can’t hold.

Although John’s replacement has no chance of winning because the lines are stacked against him, as Craig Catalanotto will explain, the replacement candidate is an honorable man and will have my vote.
