Howie Jablow

Howie Jablow of Water Mill died at Stony Brook Hospital on Thursday, April 7. He was 59.

He was born September 17, 1951, to Florence and Milton Jablow. He was raised in New Hyde Park and moved to the East End in 1978.

Mr. Jablow was the director of respiratory therapy at Southampton Hospital since 1978, a position he enjoyed and put his heart and soul into, said his family. He also shared his knowledge and expertise through educational programs for skilled students and several nursing facilities in the area. He graduated from St. Joseph’s College and received a master’s in business administration from Dowling College.

Mr. Jablow was also a founder of the Long Island Respiratory Care Managers Association, a trustee for the Water Mill Community Club and a member of the Long Island East Ski Club. He had a great curiosity for all things, researching what was needed, gathering the right equipment and “gadgets” in order to complete the project, including building his own house with help from “how to” books and wonderful friends and family.

The priority in his life was his family. He was a devoted husband and father, survivors said.

Mr. Jablow is survived by his wife Pat; three daughters, Janine and her husband Rob Balnis of East Hampton, Caitlin Jablow of Westhampton, and Brianne Jablow of Arizona; his mother Florence; brother, Scott and his wife Janet of Arizona; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He had been anxiously awaiting the birth of his first grandchild later this month.

Visiting hours took place Saturday, April 9, at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A memorial service took place at Brockett’s Sunday, April 10, with Rabbi Jan Urban officiating. Interment followed at Water Mill Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Southampton Hospital Foundation; Dominican Sisters Family Health Service, Inc; Water Mill Community Club or The Conservative Synagogue of the Hamptons.

Split Southampton Village Board Hires Police Officer From Westhampton Beach Department

A divided Southampton Village Board voted last week, 4-1, to hire a police officer who until recently worked for the Village of Westhampton Beach, where in 2021 he was suspended following an off-duty rollover accident. According to a letter of reprimand, he had carried a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and left the scene of the accident without promptly reporting it. A March 2022 settlement of disciplinary charges resulted in the officer, Connor Raynor, being suspended for 30 days and forfeiting another 30 days’ worth of paid time off.
