Hubertus (Hubie) Michael Frowein of Southampton, passed away ending his battle with ALS, on November 6, 2021 in Southampton. He was 53.

Hubie had that special combination of a free and yet disciplined spirit, he worked hard to forge and fine-tune a good life for himself, family and friends. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, generosity towards others and his love and dedication to his family. He loved life and passed accordingly.

Hubie was born on January 25, 1968 in Leverkusen, Germany to Michael Frowein and Christiane Covington (formerly Frowein). Within months of his birth, Hubie began what would become a life of world travel, spending the next 2 years in Nairobi, Kenya. His family then moved shortly back to Germany before settling in New Canaan, CT in 1973.

Hubie attended elementary and middle school in New Canaan, CT and received his high school diploma at Forman School in Litchfield, CT. He studied Photography and Fine Art at Parsons School of Design in New York spending one year on the Paris campus. Upon graduation in 1990 he started his photography career by assisting acclaimed fashion photographer Sante D’Orazio.

In 1995 he moved to Sydney, Australia to build his solo career as a professional fashion photographer. He returned to his beloved New York City a year later to continue pursuing his passion.

On one of his photoshoots he met Ivonne Kowaltschik, a stylist for German Vogue. She became the love of his life and they were married in Lugano, Switzerland in 1999.

Together they moved part time to Southampton in 2001. The couple had a deep affection for the area, and loved the bay and the ocean, both in summer and winter. The birth of their son Sebastian in 2003 sealed their decision to move full time to Southampton where their daughter Stella was born in 2006.

Now living full time in Southampton, Hubie refocused his career on his love for architecture and interior design. First as a real estate agent for Saunders and ultimately founding his own company 2:scaleconsulting. Hubie was highly regarded for his professionalism, ethical sense and understanding of the needs of his clients.

His passion for life continues to enrich the lives of those he loved.

Hubie is survived by his wife Ivonne, his children Sebastian and Stella, his brother Alex, his parents and two dogs.

A private family memorial will take place next year.

Memorial Donations may be made in Hubie Frowein’s name at www.projectals.org.

We Mark Our Ballot: Southampton Town Council Special Election

March 18 is such an odd date for a Southampton Town vote, and timing could be everything as voters go to the polls to temporarily fill a vacant seat on the Town Council, created by Tommy John Schiavoni’s election to the State Assembly in the fall. Snowbirds are away, people are heavily distracted by so many other things going on in the world, and the race could just as easily pass many town residents’ notice. But it would be unfair to both Republican Rick Martel and Democrat John Leonard not to pay attention and, more importantly, not to show up ... by Editorial Board
