Hundreds of local residents lined up in a queue of cars more than a mile long to get free surgical masks in Southampton Village.
A day after Governor Andrew M. Cuomo issued an executive order that all state residents must wear a face covering of some sort whenever they are in a public setting, the mask give-away set up by Southampton Village Mayor Jesse Warren was deluged by takers. The mayor set up the give away earlier in the week.
“It goes all the way to the end of South Main,” one police officer said of the lineup of cars that actually at one point stretched all the way from the intersection of South Main Street and Meeting House Lane to Agawam Beach.
The masks were being handed out to motorists, who were asked to keep their windows rolled up while the masks were stuffed under their windshield wipers by Martyna Sokol, in the parking lot of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton.
