The Long Island Elite Meet, is for some, the final indoor track event of the season. For others, it’s a final tuneup before the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are set for this Saturday, March 4, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

Of the three Westhampton Beach student-athletes who qualified for states — junior Trevor Hayes, senior Max Haynia and sophomore Lily Strebel, Strebel was the only one to appear at Saturday’s meet at St. Anthony’s High School. Having qualified for both the 1,000- and 1,500-meter races for states, Strebel actually ran in the 600-meter race on Saturday and placed second behind Deer Park junior Alexandra Geosits in 1:39.56. Both Geosits and Strebel were the only two runners of the eight that crossed the finish line in under 1:41.

Westhampton Beach sophomore Halle Geller also medaled. She placed fourth overall out of 16 in the 55-meter dash in 7.43 seconds after having placed third in the preliminary race in 7.42 seconds. Another sophomore, Sydney Beardslee, placed sixth in the 1,500-meter race walk in 9:28.70. Evangeline Wasser, a junior, finished the 55-meter hurdles in 10.07 seconds, which placed her 14th, and sophomore Valeria Nazarektski finished the freshman/sophomore 1,500-meter race in 5:35.42, which placed her sixth.

The Hampton Bays boys indoor track team also sent a solid contingent to Saturday’s meet. The 4x200-meter relay team of juniors Charlie Garcia, Matthew Papajohn, Liam Sutton and senior Eli Amos placed fourth in 1:36.58. Papajohn also competed in the 300-meter dash and finished sixth out of 16 runners in 37.47 seconds. Garcia and Amos also competed in the 55-meter dash and finished eighth and 11th in 6.84 seconds and 6.90 seconds, respectively. Joffre Proano, a junior, tied for sixth place in the pole vault with Kings Park junior Ryan Guzman after both cleared 11 feet 6 inches in the same amount of attempts.

Jeorgiana Gavalas was the only representative of Southampton. The junior competed in the girls 1,500-meter race and finished 10th out of 12 runners in 5:14.10.

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls indoor track team may have finished last at the League III Championships at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Friday, but they set many new personal bests and a new school record — was not broken once, but twice, in the same meet. C.J. Echavarria initially broke Grace Brosnan’s 2019 school record in the first heat of the 55-meter high hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.79 seconds, but that only lasted mere minutes. Her teammate, Sophia Figueroa, ran 9.68 seconds in the following heat to break Echavarria’s record. Point scorers, which include those placing ... by Drew Budd
