Hypocritical Action

I have been a resident of Bridgehampton for almost 40 years, and I am deeply concerned at the unfairness and lack of neighborliness reflected in the July 17 decision by the Sagaponack Village Board to limit access to Gibson Lane Beach to village residents [“Gibson Beach Will Become a Sagaponack Village Beach, Instead of Being in Control of Southampton Town,” 27east.com, September 4].

It is not clear whether Southampton Town residents — residents with a Southampton Town beach permit only — will be able to use the beach at all. If they are, they will be required to purchase a non-resident village beach permit at a much higher price.

Let us not forget that the reason that Sagaponack incorporated as a separate village was to prevent the creation of the beachfront Village of Dunehampton, out of concern that this would deprive neighbors of access to the beaches.

For the Village of Sagaponack to do the very same thing that the village was formed to prevent is hypocritical, as well as bad policy and bad judgment. I urge the Sagaponack Village Board to repeal its decision and continue to welcome Southampton Town neighbors to Gibson Lane Beach.
