J. Rodger Davis

J. Rodger Davis of Hampton Bays and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, died on Saturday, June 11. He was 80.

Mr. Davis was the only child of Harvey R. Davis and Mavis Drummond Davis of Hampton Bays. He was a 1948 graduate of Hampton Bays High School and opened Rodger’s Luncheonette on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays prior to graduation. He served as a medic in the U.S. Navy contingent to the Fleet Marine Corps on the USS Oriskany. After his honorable discharge in 1953, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves at the Shinnecock Station until the early 1960s. He served on both the Hampton Bays Ambulance Squad and the Hampton Bays Fire Department.

Mr. Davis became a Hampton Bays police officer in 1960. In 1970, he was accepted by the Department of Justice into the U.S. Marshal Service, where he proudly served until his retirement as an inspector in 1992. He earned expert marksman ranking and was also a range officer for the Marshal Service.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne “Peggy” Davis; children, Jeffrey S. Davis and his wife Maura of Argyle, Donna Davis Lukshus of Hampton Bays, daughter Jeanette Davis-Esposito and her husband Ron of Southampton; and grandchildren, Conor and Rees Davis, Alexa and Genna Lukshus and Jasmin and Lily Esposito.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 15, at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 16, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hampton Bays Historical Society, P.O. Box 588, Hampton Bays, NY 11946, or the Hampton Bays Public Library.
