James “Jimmy” Baker of Arcadia, Florida, and formerly of Eastport, died in Sarasota, Florida on May 21. He was 83.

Mr. Baker was born in Southampton on August 28, 1937 to Julia (Seaman) Baker and Harry S. Baker.

He was brought up on the family duck ranch in Eastport and graduated from Eastport High School. As Mr. Baker would tell you, from then on, he had a very full, eventful life, his family said.

Mr. Baker was a 65-year member of the Eastport Fire Department, in which he became the department’s first district mechanic. He was chief of the department at the time of the 1995 Sunrise Wildfires, one of the largest brush fires in the department’s history. He was also a Suffolk County fire coordinator.

He was married on September 11, 1965 to Marianne Truskoski, and they were married for 55 years. They resided in Eastport until moving permanently in 2012 to their home in Arcadia, never forgetting the fire department or the many friends they had made over the years.

Mr. Baker was well known for his vast knowledge of mechanics and equipment repair, and could fix just about anything. He loved building and working on 8N-V8 tractors, displaying his tractor and 1940 Ford pickup at shows and events. He also loved his airboat, running it on the river and giving rides to friends and relatives.

He was predeceased by his parents and sister Judy Ann Stys. He is survived by his wife Marianne (Truskoski) Baker; mother-in-law Helen Truskoski; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Moloney-Sinnickson Funeral Home in Center Moriches on June 1, with Firematic services that evening, and religious services on June 2. He was laid to rest in the Eastport Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center, 101 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, N.Y. 11794.

Follow the Money

The nomination by the Democratic Party of John Leonard for the upcoming Southampton Town Council election is mystifying to many in both its origin and its motivation. Having moved from Sag Harbor to Hampton Bays only a few years ago, Mr. Leonard formed the Hampton Bays Alliance, whose sole purpose seemed to be advancing the cause of a developer seeking to build a multifamily apartment complex in downtown Hampton Bays with a design that was met with strong community opposition. Early on, the Hampton Bays Alliance built support for their efforts via a communication campaign supported by some town officials ... by Staff Writer

Protecting Resources

Our environment is a finite resource that we must jealously guard. Continued environmental protection must be an integral part of the legislative agenda of any candidate seeking a seat on the Town Council and, as with any issue, a candidate must identify a specific agenda that they will pursue if elected. As our understanding of climate change and its environmental impact evolves, one’s agenda must also include a variety of measures in addition to land preservation. What follows is a list of what I would do. I would make our continued protection of the environment a signature part of the ... by Staff Writer

SCWA Maintains AAA Bond Rating

Despite persistent economic pressures and rising infrastructure costs across the region, Suffolk County Water Authority’s AAA bond rating remains unchanged, according to Fitch Ratings. The highest possible rating reflects SCWA’s strong financial management, operational efficiency and commitment to infrastructure investment without increasing long-term debt. The designation ensures SCWA would receive the most favorable interest rates if entering the bond market to fund critical infrastructure projects. “Maintaining this AAA rating demonstrates our commitment to fiscal responsibility and long-term planning,” said SCWA Chairman Charlie Lefkowitz. “Fitch’s decision reinforces that we are managing our resources wisely, which helps us keep costs down for ... by Staff Writer

Bye, Bye, Blackbird?

Last summer, there were no red-winged blackbirds living in the vicinity of Areskonk Creek in Center Moriches. Normally, their numbers are robust, as they enjoy the marsh’s bounty of flies and mosquitoes. Because of their absence, I was forced to heavily invest in mosquito repellent. And the incidents of blackbirds dive-bombing my skull while protecting their active nests were just memories. Could the bird flu have something to do with the demise of my local red-winged blackbirds [“Bird Flu Found on the East End,” “27 Speaks” podcast, February 7]? Or could it be hungry hawks with a craving for only ... by Staff Writer

Southampton Village Ocean Rescue Drill Prepares Members for Frigid Rescues

Southampton Village Ocean Rescue (SVOR), a team of volunteer first responders dedicated to open water safety, conducted a cold water rescue drill in Southampton Village on Sunday, February 23. A critical training exercise, it ensures that SVOR’s lifeguards remain prepared for emergency rescues in frigid conditions. The drill, coordinated by SVOR 1st Assistant Chief Kyle Cranston, who served as the officer in command, and led by SVOR Special Operations Advisor Jason Feinberg, simulated a real-life winter emergency. Team members practiced varied techniques of cold water extractions, and rapid response protocols in frigid temperatures. “Many people assume that water rescues only ... by Staff Writer
