James Mason of East Hampton and Hampton Bays died at home with his family by his side on March 16 from complications due to cardiac amyloidosis. He was 84
Born in Jamaica, New York, to Jean and William Mason, he attended Sewanhaka High School, where he played football and lacrosse. He joined the U.S. Army in 1956 and became a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was very proud of his service to his country, his family noted.
He trained at the Long Island Lighting Company and worked as a first class lineman and foreman for 42 years.
Mr. Mason was an avid sailor, especially loving the hours spent on the waters at Three Mile Harbor and Gardners Bay in East Hampton in his boat, “Song of Joy.” He was also an ardent cyclist, cycling daily to work and back home, a 15-mile journey each way. He had a special spot in his heart for barbershop music, singing for a number of years with the “Whalers’” men’s chorus.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Fiona C. Mason, with whom he raised three daughters: Janet Fanning, Elizabeth McGuire and Fiona McKinney, all whom survive him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Mason; his three daughters; his sister Jean Clappi; stepsons Andrew and Christopher LoMonaco; grandchildren James Fanning, Meghan Fanning, Margaret Smith, Annabel Lewis, Helen Lewis, Robert Williams and Fiona Fleck; step-grandchildren Haden and Evan LoMonaco; and three great-grandchildren Joshua Smith Jr., Jordyn Smith and Liam Williams.
Donations in his name to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, N.Y. 11978 would be greatly appreciated by his family.
