James P. (Jim) Drew, longtime resident of Hampton Bays, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on December 22, 2021 at his home with his loving family at his side. He was 80 years old.

Born on March 17, 1941 to Mary (Cleary) and Denis Drew, Jim was the eldest of three children. He was raised in the Inwood section of New York City and attended Good Shepherd School, Power Memorial Academy, and Stony Brook University.

Jim’s first job took him out of New York City to the east end of Long Island, where he worked as a medical lab technician for Southampton Hospital. It was here where he met his wife of 55 years Teresa (Wesnofske), who also worked at the hospital. After his career as a lab technician he was a member of the Southampton Town Council from 1996-1999. Jim was always a dedicated public servant, who was involved in numerous boards and committees. He was an active parishioner at the Church of St. Rosalie, Hampton Bays, where he served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector and a member of the Holy Name Society. In addition to being a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus, Jim also served as board member and supporter of the Dominican Sisters Family Health Services.

Although Jim had many causes close to his heart, his family was the joy of his life. He was a devoted, loving husband and an amazing father to his 10 daughters and 3 sons.  There was rarely a school sporting event, recital or individual milestone that wasn’t graced by his warm smile, loud cheers and welcoming arms.  As his family grew with the addition of 29 grandchildren, he always made time to celebrate in their special moments too. He cherished the many travel adventures he took with his wife, children and grandchildren, creating a lifetime of lasting memories.

Jim leaves behind a legion of friends and family who will miss his generous spirit and sense of humor.  He will forever be remembered as a selfless, compassionate and humble man whose faith, family and friends meant the world to him.   He is survived by his loving wife Teresa of 55 years, his appreciative children; Kevin (Maureen) Drew, Mary (Kevin) Walsh, Ann Marie (Bartosz) Chilicki, Bernadette (Jerry) Buckley, Teresa (John) Venesina; Richard (Krista) Drew, Catherine (Christopher) Sutton, Julia (Nathan) Reese, Maureen
(Henry) Schwarz, Patricia Lynch, Elizabeth (Brandon) Arnister, Christopher (Amanda) Drew, Colleen (Andrew) Spirito, his adoring sister Julia Barrett, 29 admiring grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by both his parents and brother Richard.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Saint Rosalie’s R.C. Church on December 28, 2021.   Those who had the pleasure of knowing Jim, know he was an advocate for so many causes, particularly individuals without a voice including the unborn and those with special needs. He was also an advocate for Catholic education. In his honor, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of the Hamptons Catholic School, 160 North Main Street, Southampton, NY; Birthright of Peconic, 99 W. Montauk Highway, Hampton Bays, NY; or The Southampton Fresh Air Home (SFAH) 36 Barkers Island Road, Southampton, NY.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

The Urgency of Real

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories. The arrival of the era of streaming services ... 10 Dec 2025 by Editorial Board

Proceed With Caution

Overlay districts are a common zoning tool used by many municipalities. Southampton Town has used them to varying degrees of success — the aquifer protection overlay district has been a winner; a downtown overlay district in Hampton Bays less so — in various parts of the town. They essentially look at the existing zoning, then allow those rules governing what can be done on properties to be reconsidered if there’s a newer concern to be addressed. In a bid to clean up the process for creating more affordable housing, the Town Board is looking at a new overlay district that ... by Editorial Board

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... by Karl Grossman
