Jane A. Busking of Westhampton Beach died on January 4. She was 89.

She was born on September 11, 1935. She grew up in Rosedale, New York, where she met her husband, Robert Busking. She and her family moved to Westhampton Beach in the early 1950s, where her father, George Cobb, started Cobb’s Luncheonette. It is presently the Post Stop Café.

She and her husband were married in 1954 at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church. Through 67 years of marriage, they created a wonderful life together, raised their children and built a successful business. They were lifelong residents of Westhampton Beach and felt blessed to call it home.

Her career in her early years was as a beautician at Petty’s Hair Salon, where she cut hair and gave permanent waves for $5. She later left Petty’s to start Westhampton Glass with her husband in 1969. They were a dynamic duo growing their business and building the first strip mall in Westhampton Beach on Riverhead Road that is still operational today.

She also found time to stay involved in causes within her community. She was a member of the Eastern Stars, and a Sunday school teacher and deacon at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church.

She was an avid golf and tennis player, and a long-time member of Westhampton Country Club and the Legacy Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. She was a fixture in the neighborhood, walking 5 miles per day in and around the village. She also loved to play bridge and was a Master Bridge player.

She is survived by her sister, SuzAnne Jessup (Franklin); her children, Bob Busking Jr. (Deborah), Bonnie Wootten (Eric) and Betsy Clarke (Bill); seven grandchildren, Heather and Hunter Wootten, Cara Corrigan (Andrew), Billy Clarke (Nina), Bobby and Emily Clarke and Blake Busking; and her great-grandchildren, Henry and Charlie Corrigan. She was predeceased by her husband.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, January 9, from 5-8 p.m. at Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. A church service will take place on Friday, January 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Westhampton Presbyterian Church, 90 Meeting House Road,

Westhampton Beach, New York 11978.

The Wrong Side of History

With the end of a long career of public service on the East End, I am looking forward to new opportunities in this next chapter of my life, including some time to decompress and enjoy friends and family. One of those opportunities I couldn’t pass up was the offer to do a column periodically for The Express News Group. The East End continues to confront so many important challenges and changes. I am thankful to have the chance to offer some opinion and perspective, and maybe an inside view, on some of the important issues of the day. This week, ... by FRED W. THIELE JR.

Fractured Trust

Thursday, December 19, marked another disgraceful chapter in the long history between the Southampton Town government and the Shinnecock Nation. A week before Christmas, the Southampton Town Board voted, 3-2, to engage in economic warfare by pursuing litigation against the Shinnecock Nation’s gas station plaza project. The gas station plaza project has been in development for over a year and will be a vital revenue stream for the nation. It is located on our sovereign land that has never been taxed or zoned by the Town of Southampton. The town’s actions have deteriorated the relationship between the Shinnecock Nation and ... by Staff Writer
