John Dagney of Sag Harbor died on September 29 at the East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue. He was 87. He was a resident of Sag Harbor since 1973.
The first of five children, he was raised in Philadelphia, where he graduated from Northeast Catholic High School. After serving in the United States Navy, Dagney graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
He relocated to New York City and established a career in advertising with Union Carbide and Time Inc, among others. He retired from Hachette Filipacchi as circulation manager for several of the company’s magazine publications.
After his retirement in 1997, John was active in numerous charitable and philanthropic organizations in the area, among them are: St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry, East End Hospice, Camp Good Grief and Sag Harbor Historical Society.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Florence; and his niece, Kathy.
He is survived by his spouse, Edward Schlessiger; his brothers, Gerald (Fran) of Pennsylvania, David (Terry) of New Jersey; sisters, Fran (Louis) Molettiere of Pennsylvania, Marie (Joseph) Dunleavy of Georgia; nieces, Marianne and Gina; and nephews Peter, Michael, and John; as well as grandnephews Alex, John Theodore, Logan, Frederick; and grandniece Leila.
A memorial service will be held with date and place to be announced.
