John J. Daly of Bridgehampton died on May 2 in Jupiter, Florida, after a long contest with bladder cancer. He was 92.
Mr. Daly served for many years on the Bridgehampton Citizens Advisory Committee.
Mr. Daly was born on Staten Island and graduated from Wagner College in 1949 and Saint John’s Law School in 1952.
Following law school, he entered the Coast Guard as a judge advocate general, separating with the rank of lieutenant, junior grade in 1953. Mr. Daly started his law career as an entertainment attorney with Lewis, MacDonald and Varian in New York City, until he was recruited by his client Technicolor, Inc. of Los Angeles, for which he worked as vice president and general counsel between 1958 and 1964.
Upon his return to New York City, he switched careers to real estate development, working as an executive with several entities including JD Construction, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Savings Bank and Accord Properties. Following the sale of Accord, he formed a joint venture with Morse Diesel performing municipal construction projects in New York City, retiring in 1993. Mr. Daly then served as an arbitrator for the Real Estate Board of New York, the School Construction Authority and FINRA.
In 1980, he and his wife Dorothy purchased a home on Lumber Lane in Bridgehampton, where they lived until her progressive illness resulted in their move to Florida in 2017. Following her death, after 66 years of marriage, in 2019, Mr. Daly returned to the East End, where he spent his last two summers with his daughter, Kim, in Water Mill.
He is survived by his three daughters, Susan Grymes, Kim Kelly and her husband Mark, and Lauren Keating and her husband Jerome; 10 grandchildren, Matthew Kelly and his wife Kate, Jed Kelly and his wife Caroline, Lawson Kelly, John Grymes, Harrison Grymes, Caroline Grymes, Alex Keating, Andrew Keating, Nick Keating and Chris Keating; four great-grandchildren, Michael, Theo, Cora and Amelia Kelly; and his sister-in-law, Edna Thornton of Wainscot.
A memorial Service will be held July 17, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Queen the Most Holy Rosary Church in Bridgehampton, with a reception to follow at the Kelly home in Water Mill.
