John L. “Jack” Hanlon died peacefully at home in Southampton on January 14. He was 87.

Born in Bronxville, New York, and raised in Jackson Heights, he attended Regis High School and Iona College. After graduation, he was a reservist in the U.S. Army for six years.

He forged a successful career as a CPA and CFO in commercial printing in New York City for 50 years, according to his family. Additionally, he was an avid lifelong student of bridge, politics, his beloved Yankees, Jets and horse racing.

He was passionate about the sport of bocce, which he played and competed on teams in the community well into his later years. However, it was his caring love of family, his strong faith and his beloved friends that trumped all, his family said.

He is survived by his loving wife MaryAnne; his four children, Christopher (Cece), Elizabeth, Laura, Erin; and his 11 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, 481 Westhampton-Riverhead Road, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 (eeh.org), would be appreciated by the family.

Under Attack

Democracy is under attack, and calling out the shifty, shady ways political parties are taking choice away from voters is essential. It’s very much an issue at the national level, for so many reasons. Not least of which, the House of Representatives — with the full support of Republicans, including 1st District U.S. Representative Nick LaLota — approved a measure last week called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or the SAVE Act, which would make it much harder for any American to register to vote. Seeking to weed out ballots cast by noncitizens — something that happens so rarely ... by Editorial Board
